When you are faced with a decision, how do you decide your process for how you are going to make the decision? We all know about pro/con lists, asking friends for advice, or just trusting our instincts, but of all the possible ways to decide to decide, what determines which one you’ll use in any given situation?
If I have to decide something that baffles me, and I have no idea how to decide, and there’s no one around who can give me advice, I’ll do a lot of reading on the subject. If reading gets me nowhere and still can’t decide, I’ll think about what I can do. If all the thinking doesn’t help me, I’ll look for a sign that will put me on the right track. I’ll have my ears open to what someone is saying or doing. Maybe someone will say something that will help me. But if nothing works, I’ll write the problem and state the pros and cons of the situation. If I still don’t like my options, I’ll sleep on it and let my subconscious help me find answers. Sometimes this works, other times it gets me nowhere. So after trying a few things and not able to reach a decision, I let my instincts kick in. Whichever way my instincts tell me to go, I’ll go. And usually it works in helping me decide what I want to do.
So when nothing else helps, my instincts help me decide to decide.
After writing this, I’m totally confused. Are you?
